I'll look into this. After some more study, the common way to mount this is through the wing - it actually mounts on the top of the upper wing skin. Not sure why they used such a large cylinder for this!

Hi David.

Glad you're following along. I'm using the Yellow gear because of my work with them (got this in trade for artwork/advertising/website work I have done for them a few years back). Several of the other builds I have seen online have used the Sierra gear. I've not seen one with the Robart gear, so I can't be of much help there.

On my BVM Bandit I had the same issue: the strut would not hide completely inside the well. I added a washer between the retract mount and the retract rail on the 2 outboard bolts. This helped the strut "tuck-in" and out of sight. I think a small shim would be better (less loads on the plywood rails).

Buddy, I would use a BVM offset hinge, with a very small air cylinder connected directly to the hinge brace and laid flat on the top skin of the wing (only very small foam carving required).
The advantage of connecting directly to the hinge is that you will need very short stroke cylinder, vs the mammoth provided by YA.

So glad I found this build thread! I just ordered mine.
I will be converting it to a P-47N most likely.

Do you know the pro's/con's of YA vs Robart gear?

Later,

I read about the Bob Violett metal method using paint and I think the metal has got to be a little easier to use. The paint seemed to be very picky and time consuming. At least the flite metal is metal as such.

No wonder the Eagle had some ground handling problems - with a prop that big! Whoops I forgot, that is a scale prop for a P-47. It sure looks funny though...
